Here is a fun playlist to accompany this letter. Enjoy. xx
I’m just a girl… standing in front of a mirror… trying not to feel so fucking weird about affirmations.
I understand they’re the key to manifesting inner peace and happiness. I believe in their power to reframe how you think and feel about yourself. And yet, I cannot recite affirmations without feeling like a big ol’ dummy.
But recently, while singing in my car (somehow not feeling like an idiot?), I realized that traditional affirmations don’t feel natural to me. Looking in a mirror and telling myself that “I am strong” or “I am brave” just feels like…
What would feel more natural are beautiful words of love written by true artists. In fact, I never want a man to tell me, “You’re so beautiful” — I’d prefer him to say:
You and your body… every single portion
Send chills up and down my spine
Like Ginuwine sings to the object of his affection in the BEAUTIFUL song, “Pony”!!!
90s songs, in my mind, are the epitome of true love and confidence. Ain’t Nobody could measure up to the confidence level of L.L Cool J or Missy Elliot. I just feel like if I could channel that kind of confidence, I’d believe in myself a whole lot more.
Here are some 90s song lyrics to use as affirmations that hit different and change your neural pathways to be more self-compassionate:
Step 1: Look in the mirror.
Step 2: Say the following (in spoken word or song)
1. Obviously, the ultimate 90s song from The Bodyguard:
I wish you jo-oy… and happiness
Butaboveallthis, I wish you lo-oooove
2. IMHO, Celine gives off masculine/feminine energy:
I'm your ladyyyyyyyyyyyyy
And you are my man
3. Me and Mariah go back like babies with pacifiers:
When you walk by every night
Talkin’ sweet and lookin’ fine
I get kinda hectic inside, oooooh baby
4. Kinda creepy, but awesome? Thanks En Vogue!
If I could wear your clothes
I’d pretend I was you…
And lose contro-ol
5. Just very good advice.
Don’t go chasin’ waterfalls
6. You’re not regular fly, you’re supa-dupa fly.
Me, I’m supa fly
Supa-dupa fly, supa-dupa fly
7. Some say it’s a break-up/revenge song, but I think Alanis is completely sane.
I want you to know.
That I'm happy for you
I wish nothing, but
The best —
8. The choke hold The Cranberries had on me.
Oh, my life…
Is changin' every day
In every possible way
9. This entire song is AFFIRMATION CITY! RIP Brian Wilson :( (father of the Wilson from Wilson Phillips)
No one can change your life except for you
Don't ever let anyone step all over you
Just open your heart and your mind
Is it really fair to feel, this way inside?
For those who are a little bit of everything all rolled into one:
I'm a bitch, I'm a lover
I'm a child, I'm a mother
I'm a sinner, I'm a saint
I do not feel ashamed
But seriously, affirmations are very serious. The fun thing about being human is that we believe everything we think about ourselves which is SO SILLY. We have trained our brains to believe that our negative, obtrusive thoughts are reality… and they are not.
It’s like I always say… just open your heart and your mind. Is it really fair to feel this way inside? Whoa-oh-oh.
5 things
🧑🦳 I have never shopped at Tuckernuck because it feels too white for me? (I’m literally 99.9% Irish, so who am I to talk?) But this dress looks like a perfect summer dress. I won’t be buying it.
🌶️ I understand that I am the problem, but I feel like I needed a cold shower after reading this interview between Walton Goggins & Amie Lou Wood.
🎒*Seinfeld voice* What is the deal with tiny bag bag charms? I can’t understand why they exist, but I think they’re adorable.
🪼 I have been waiting for this documentary, Titan, about the submersible and it’s just as sad and frustrating as I thought it’d be. Also, this meme.
🌛 Conan on Late Night with Seth Meyers. This is very important to me.
This has been a very busy week and I’m currently in bed with a stomachache and mental overwhelm. It’s funny, because I’m basically complaining about THREE DAYS OF WORK, but facilitation, teaching, strategic planning, socialization, driving, etc. has completely wiped me out.
There’s also the fact that everything is terrible right now, all of my shows have ended (bring back 22 episode seasons!!!) and for whatever reason, SMARTLESS STARTED A MOBILE COMPANY? I got so riled up that I trolled them with an Arrested Development quote, and I’m not entirely proud of myself for it.
Anyways, I’ve got to go to pilates for my DUMB MENTAL HEALTH.
Live, laugh, love,

Quoting songs, 90s ones especially for us 80s babies, give us the chance to say some pretty fuckin' bold statements. That's kind of awesome. And also ridiculous statements like " too sexy for Milan.". Point is, I dig and share that vibe. Keep quoting to your heart's content.
bahahaha these affirmations are great! I will think of you everytime I listen to Pony from now on. Hope your tummy ache is better!
